Motion Device is a hard rock band based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
It’s no coincidence their brand mark is a nod to Greek mythology and Orpheus, whose music and poetry were so beautiful even the rocks and trees would be moved. Fronted by lead vocalist Sara Menoudakis alongside founding members David Menoudakis on drums and percussion, Andrea Menoudakis on bass and keys, and Josh Marrocco on guitars, the band has amassed more than 85,000 fans online and more than 15 million views on their YouTube channel.
Initially known for their dynamic covers, Motion Device first landed online in 2010, taking to YouTube to share covers from the likes of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, and Rush.
In the years since, they’ve transitioned to original music and songwriting, a shift that was enthusiastically received by their fans.
All three releases from Motion Device have been the result of crowd-funding success and the overwhelming support from their audience around the world. 2014’s EP, Welcome to the Rock Revolution raised $13,000 and 2015’s Eternalize raised $32,000. This year’s Wide Awake is the band’s most ambitious and musically rewarding release yet, with the conceptual 20-song double album inspiring their audience to raise $60,000.
The band is on a mission to bring their music and message to as many people as possible.
When you can’t find the words to express yourself, fear not, there is Motion Device. Wide Awake is the new concept album out from this incredible band hailing from Toronto, Canada.
If I may be so bold as to express my initial reaction while listening to the album. It is what I would consider a hard rock musical and Motion Device is walking us through a chapter of life. You can almost envision a movie with no words, just actors and actresses acting out the music. Especially with the little flecks of “real life” audio, going through the car radio channels, commercials, and alarm clocks only to get to the “monologue” if you will, rather than them speaking, a heart pounding and adrenaline inducing song kicks you right in the face while the actor or actress speeds around life.
Each song has its own energy to it while still continuing on with the overall cohesive plot of the album. It is done in such a way that it does not become too heavy or like you can’t enjoy the album broken up into songs. Some concept albums, if you skip around or you simply don’t have the time to dedicate to listen to the album in its entirety, can lose the listener. Motion Device has managed to capture both aspects, you can listen at your leisure and still get the intense feeling of the album but if you want the full experience then I would highly recommend listen to the album at least for the first time, in order and at once. I will only touch base on a few songs in the album that hit me in an eye opening way, but it was hard to narrow it down to a few selections.

Angel is all about beautiful anguish with undertones of hope and unconditional love. Not saying it is a love song by any means, love encompasses all forms, not just romantic. The vocals are astonishing and then the moment of peace you feel when the piano accompanies Sarah’s vocal nearly brings you to tears, at least it did to me. Then enter the guitar solo which is finished perfectly with the single drum blast, this song has quickly become my favorite. You feel as though you are standing on top of a mountain and singing this song to the world below because you need to let these emotions out of your heart or you will burst.
Is This Real?, is a profound song and one that makes you contemplate your existence. In this musical movie that I have in my mind, the lead is under a bridge overlooking the water and has flashbacks of their life while trying to make a tough decision about the crossroads they now face. It is rather simple in comparison to the other songs but do not let that fool you, it is simply beautiful. Because honestly when we struggle with our life decisions, do we have a lot of glitz and glamour? No, it is stripped down to the bare bones of our emotions and weighing the pros and cons of our decision. It makes you yearn to assess your life and if you are on the path you were meant to walk. This song taps into your soul and wraps you in this blanket of melodies, to provide you a metaphorical cocoon, trying to figure out if this is real. Once you have figured it out, you emerge as a beautiful butterfly and get to finally fly free knowing you have accepted who you are and what you have been through.
I do appreciate the palette cleanser or breather songs throughout the album. Which are typically the instrumental tracks a band has to break up the album. They do not diminish the energy nor take away from the album as a whole, but rather allow your heart and mind a breath to just absorb everything you have heard or felt. Sometimes albums can get too heavy and make you feel almost trapped within your mind or heart, you need that release to come back for air.
Not all of the songs are set to a more somber profound tone. The song, Warrior, gives you that adrenaline fix and gets you ready to take on the day or the obstacle you are facing. The vocals have that in your face punch that make you feel empowered. The rhythm and melody of the guitars and drums keep up that intensity you need to make you feel like a warrior. Before you know it, you are joining ranks with all of those who have become a warrior listening to this album and have become free yet strong to take on the powers that be.
I didn’t touch base on each song in the album because honestly it is something you need to hear in order to fully grasp my humble thoughts on Motion Device’s artistry. But I will say this, the final song, The Infinite Wave, leaves you with a hunger for more. In this musical movie that I have been through, I certainly hope there is a sequel but I know regardless this album certainly has left me wide awake. So I strongly encourage everyone to listen to this album and not just listen but give yourself fully to the music. Allow your mind and body to go on this musical journey and see what it conjures up in your inner psyche. By the end, you will leave a different person, not in a bad sense, but in an enlightened way.
