"Great Reckoning are a 4 piece alternative-rock band, hailing from Tyldesley in Greater Manchester, UK, drawing influence from bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters and Royal Blood. Combining instant-hit riffs with a powerhouse rhythm section, the band are known for their tenaciously energetic live performances."
Great Reckoning really personifies musical charisma. Even though the EP is only 4 songs (there is a bonus track as well), it packs a powerful punch and infects your mind with intense vocals and melodies.
3 Times Over is a fantastic way to kick off the EP, it really gets your adrenaline coursing through your veins and gets you into an energetic mindset. The vocal style has just enough of that gritty quality to make them stand out over the heart pounding riffs of the guitars and fills of the drums. It is impressive how they are able to keep the energy and enthusiasm going strong throughout the song, even the moments when it cools down a bit, you are still trapped in their musical web.
The quintessential heartbreak and angst song would have to be Mary. The lyrics capture the raw emotion of having your heart broken but moving forward and putting your life back together. It embodies the constant change of emotions perfectly where you have moments of calm and thinking everything will be alright, to the moments of anger that someone could possibly betray you in the worst possible way. The vocals capture your heart and the guitars and drums help your mind understand what the song is trying to make you feel.
Back to Reality and Owl’s Eye are solid stamina. The vocals, guitars, drum, style, and arrangement are top notch. The lyrics and style of Owl’s Eye has this dark, mysterious, and sensual feel. Then gives you this powerful kick when the refrain begins. Only to finish you off with the breakdown of the song. The way the song was arranged, speaks volumes of their artistic ability. Back to Reality is all about the gritty hard rock and much like Owl’s Eye, it’s almost like it plays with your mind with the arrangement of the song. You think the song is going to go one direction and much like a wave, it sneaks in from the side and knocks you off your feet. The execution of both songs is quite impressive and if you are a fan of hard rock or alternative rock, then Great Reckoning is a band for you to keep an eye on.
