"Emerging with a new line up and an explosive new sound, MERRIN incorporates the goodness of high energy rock with soul and passion. Feel it as it smacks you in the chest in the best kind of way. Loved by many, they have played support to iconic acts I Am Giant and American band’s Everclear and Fuel, headlining their own tours around the country and performing to big crowds at various events throughout their home town of Wellington, New Zealand. Charlie Phillips is one of this country's most mesmerising female rock vocalists. Her passion and drive is as inspiring and intoxicating as her soul-fuelled voice. With her alluring stage presence and powerful melodies, it is not surprising that her voice has drawn a lot of interest overseas.
With an edge defined by a distinctive guitar sound driven by Karl Wootton (Rhythm Guitar) and Angelo Pantelakis (Lead Guitar), they are joined by Richard Maxwell Jnr (Drums) and Logan Wood (Bass), the powerful rhythm section, to create life and pump substance into the heartbeat of this rock focussed band.
“Guano Apes, Nico, Living Colour, Deftones, and Rage Against the Machine - you could probably name these if you really need a sonic reference” ~ Katarzyna 'NINa' Górnisiewicz, Fabryka Music Magazine "
What can I say about Merrin, honestly words elude me. They are a chaotic storm of passion, intensity, heart, and soul. A band that I fear no words could do them justice but I will do my best to capture their artistry in my humble words.
Durty Little Secret hits you hard but in such a good way. Charlie’s vocals are absolutely astounding and can certainly hold her own among some heavy hitting female vocalists like Janis Joplin and Joan Jett, just as a reference point. But her style is one of a kind so don’t think that is all you will be getting from her. The drums and guitars elevate the intensity of this song to new heights. This song gets into your body and makes you feel powerful yet at the same time have a playful little vixen inside of you. This song displays the game of cat and mouse perfectly, not just in the lyrics but in the entire performance of the band. As well as it sets the tone for the album and you know you better buckle up and hold on tight, because you are about to embark on one intense ride.

The mark of true artists is one who does not restrict themselves to one style or genre. I think that is one of the things I admire about Merrin, they encompass a whole spectrum of musical style. For example in Ode To The Homicidal Trash Queen, that song takes you on a whirlwind adventure but still sounding very cohesive. The vocals go between clean and gritty, with a vocal breakdown that just finishes the song nicely. An excellent guitar solo and once again the drums really keep that heart pounding rhythm going. This song playfully bounces between a hard rock, alternative, and almost a bluesy rock, it keeps you guessing. There is a seductive quality about this song, that keeps you intrigued and mesmerized, of course when it ends, it leaves you with the sensation of wanting more. Which I believe is what any musician would want, the audience wants to hear more from you, they want your corruption. I know I do.
While each song on the album has its own vibe, if you listen to the entire album at once it flows perfectly. The song that really stuck out to me was Father. That song is unapologetically free. It embraces its sin which in turn releases its soul. The vocal arrangement is one of the best, then when you add in the cadence of the guitar, you actually feel as if you are falling from grace. The song is done extremely tastefully and respectfully. But let’s be honest, who hasn’t had a moment where they wanted to let go of that “good” side and want to fall from grace, Merrin just happens to give you a taste and tell you it’s ok. Let go and just do as you will, in the end, living life to the fullest is what really matters. I can’t wait to hear more from Merrin because I think they are a force to be reckoned with. The chemistry of the band is undeniable and melds well together, making it impossible not to fall in love with their music.
