When going through my music submissions, I am always on the hunt for artists that push the envelope, so to speak, in regards to not conforming to music stereotypes. So when I received the submission from Dr. Dune, I was certainly intrigued after reading his biography. It seemed like a very eclectic approach to Metal music and one that I couldn't wait to hear how he executed such a challenging task.
I could immediately hear the "surf" influence which was also apparent in the song titles of the album. Introvoid was the perfect opening song to set the tone of this musical journey, that by the end of the album, you actually felt a wide range of emotions. Almost like the perfect story, you had suspense, sadness, happiness, and even a touch of musical danger.
The rest of the album continued on this musical adventure of the comforting soothing surf style mixed with the elements of danger and urgency you find within the Metal genres. Each song was different in their own way and told a different story while each one still keeping the original story line. While there are no vocals on any of the songs, he makes up for it in the intensity of the rhythm. I think that is one of the greatest challenges for those who choose to go a pure instrumental route. It is difficult to make a song interesting enough for a person to listen to where there are no vocals to create a literal path of empathy. Most say they love the lyrics because the song understands them. With the instrumental approach, it almost challenges the listener to find the empathy on a deeper level. It is a blank canvas each time you listen to it, so the song is forever evolving into what your soul really needs to release.
Of all the songs on the album, I would have to say that Atomic Tan was my personal favorite because the Death Metal influence was really strong and for some reason that particular song truly spoke to my soul. But I think no matter who listens to it, each song will paint a different story for you and it really is a creation that can suit your mood no matter what you might be feeling. I look forward to hearing many more great albums from Dr. Dune, which the 2nd full length album will be released later this year, and hope others take this musical journey as well. We all can use a little shake up every now and again, and just let our imaginations go while getting engrossed in the music.
